Coot Cove, Funter Bay Saturday 06.29.2013

We made an early start for today’s 48 mile trip, our first leg on the 158 mile journey to Sitka.

After dealing with the holding tank and topping off the fuel and water tanks we spent most of the day traveling down Gastineau Channel  rounding the bottom of Douglas Island, then heading north again to Lynn Canal before turning south down Chatham Strait.  Four of the six hours got back as far north as where we started in the morning.  Unfortunately this is the only way in and out of Juneau.

We saw a lot of whale activity today – the most so far on our journey! 

 

Right as we entered Coot Cove, which is at the NW end of Funter Bay, we saw four humpback whales!

 

Once anchored we decided to drop a crab pot and see if we could at least get one crab for our lunch tomorrow.  Because of the black/dear flies we had to outfit Bruce in mosquito netting!

 A nice way to finish the trip for today!
